Synopsis

In 2028, in a gloomy Tunis infested by a Pandemic, Zaïn loses his wife Nour with whom he is madly in love. His grief is immense. He turns against the system and refuses to take the daily pill that is supposed to protect the population from contracting the virus. Since then, he has been hunted down by the authorities and is hiding in the Medina. While the whole population has stopped dreaming, Zaïn starts dreaming again and sees his wife who tells him that there is something going on in connection with this famous pill. He also meets several people in his dreams who tell him they are his ancestors.

Our Sweet Hell

Synopsis

Away from her home country for over 5 years, Fátima Trindade (25), a young lawyer who lives in Fortaleza (Brazil) is forced to move back to São Tomé and Príncipe to uncover the reasons behind her teen sister Fayna (15) suicide attempt. Back home, she has the chance to heal her relationship with her sister who stopped talking and with their estranged mother Fernanda Santos (44), who refuses to see what’s going on with Fayna. While pursuing answers, Fátima realizes that her sister has her share of skeletons in her closet and she is confronted with her own still open wounds from the past.

Shadow Runner

Synopsis

Emmanuel Kiplagat’s life revolves around athletics. Born in Kabarnet, Baringo in Rift Valley Kenya, he grew up inspired by his father who was an athlete and in an area full of legendary Marathon runners such as the great Paul Tergat.

Shadow Runner is an intimate and revealing character driven documentary about his sacrifices, dreams and ambitions. Despite his love of country and athletics, he faces a life changing decision, he has been offered a chance to go to Japan and earn a living or remain in Kenya and hope it works out through athletics after the trials.

Shadow Runner weaves together the story of Kiplagat’s incredible drive to represent Kenya in the Olympics. We see him on a journey to fulfill his purpose of running for Self, Country, his Coach (Barnaba), and Family.

The Spirits & Black Lioness

Synopsis

In the year 2050, an asteroid-shaped deity (mysterious luminary) named Apophis (Apophyses) crashes to earth, causing an unprecedented climatic deregulation. 95% of the water is absorbed, the fauna and flora totally ravaged, cities destroyed, monstrous and mystical beings unleashed on the surface of the whole earth, it’s chaos… In this post-apocalyptic world, the survivors and the most hardened have built kingdoms and fortified cities around the rare water resources. Among these kingdoms, the Kongo Kingdom is one of the most powerful and flourishing, founded around two pillars: Technology, held by the Mpazu clan, and Kongo spirituality, held by the NSAKU clan whose totem is Bastet. However, the kingship of the kingdom is entrusted to the Nzinga clan, which is considered neutral for the good balance.Despite the harmony within the kingdom, it has suffered from ideological tensions for decades between spirituality and science.

We, People of the Islands

Synopsis

Five friends reunite in the middle of Santiago Island’s countryside, in Cape Verde. Following Julio’s invitation, former PAIGC (African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde) guerrillas, Tutu, Silvino, Pedro Pires, and Agnelo get together for the first time after decades and reminisce over the greatest utopian adventure of their lives: Operation Cuba. Organized by Amílcar Cabral, to train them in the military in Cuba and return to Cape Verde to free the country from the grips of colonialism. Through their recollections, we navigate between past and present. Immersing themselves in memories, our protagonists reflect in a fun and sincere way on the victories, defeats, and disappointments of their independence process. They wonder about the future of Cape Verde and Africa in an increasingly fragile world.

OUAGA FILM LAB 7th edition

OUAGA FILM LAB is pleased to announce that its 7th edition will be held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso from September 26 to October 1, 2022.

With a few weeks to go before the 7th edition and due to uncertainties that have arisen regarding the project to relocate OUAGA FILM LAB to Ivory Coast, we have decided to maintain the 2022 edition in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on the same dates, i.e. from September 26 to October 1.

OUAGA FILM LAB team sincerely apologizes to all our technical and financial partners and especially to the laureates of this 7th edition for the inconvenience that this change of location may cause.

The selection of 12 projects remains unchanged with project leaders from regions previously absent from the selection such as Kenya, Tunisia, South Africa, Egypt, Sao Tome and Principe and Mozambique. Selected projects leaders come also from Burkina Faso, Benin, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and Senegal. Ouaga film lab

The Ouaga Film Lab team is pleased to announce the projects selected for its 7th edition, which will take place from 26 September to 1 October 2022 in Ouagadougou.

More than one hundred applications from all the countries of the continent were received during the call for projects launched in March. After deliberation, the Ouaga Film Lab selection committee selected the following 12 projects:

5 documentary projects, 5 fiction projects and 2 series projects
42% of the participants are women
The selected projects come from South Africa, Burkina Faso, Benin, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, Central African Republic, Senegal, Tunisia.

Zinder

The wind-swept town of Zinder in the heart of the Sahel region of Niger is a place travellers only pass through.
Kara-Kara, the former lepers’ quarter, is the pariahs’ district of this town. Gangs referred to as the “Palais” have sprung up in this area and are spreading their influence throughout the town. Obsessed by a culture of bodybuilding and violence, the gang members induce fear in the population.

Outside the moments spent together in a body-building camp, some of them follow the path that will lead them to a life of crime and prison or a violent death, others strive to pull themselves out of the rut they find themselves in. This is the case for Siniya, Bawo and Ramsess, whom the director, originally from Zinder, has succeeded in filming up close to reveal to us their survival strategies. By following them in their daily lives divided between their gang, their family and fending for themselves, she gives us a sense of their desire to break free from the cycle of violence which has built their identities. Children Nightcare

Synopsis

In the courtyard of Mrs. Coda, around 8 pm, Odile and Farida come in, holding hands of their children. They are prostitutes who entrust their kids to this old lady before going to the “Black”, a festive street that never sleeps. Odile, Farida and some of their comrades navigate from bar to bar, from man to man. In the early morning, when the “Black” starts to empty, Odile and Farida pick up their children. Once at home, tired, they rest. When they wake up, they take us in the intimacy of their life as mothers, between domestic activities, caring for children and coquetry. As a routine, at night, the “Black” recalls its faithful while Odile drops her child in the night-care.

Synopsis

In a small village in Niger, part of the animist population has recently converted either to Islam or to Christianity. These religions have created division in the village. The hearts of people have hardened through this extremism.

National Road N°1 is the dividing line. One night, in November 2009, a sermon organized by radical Muslims caused sparks, crystallizing tension and permanent distrust on both sides of the road.

In 2016, with the election of a new leader approaching, the village must confront its past to decide its future. I come back to this place and although I am a Christian, I decided to build my house on the other side of the road, to begin the reconstruction of a dialogue between people.
